Here I have analysed this double page spread of Lana Del Rey for its codes and conventions. I have chosen to analyse this double page spread in particular because the artist used in this spread is the same genre of music I like and want to do for my music magazine. so when I come to create my music magazine I know now what thing to include to make it effective and how it can relate to the music genre.

Preliminary task

Here, I have created my preliminary task of a school magazine front cover and contents page. For this task I used an original piece of photography with features a medium close up of a student with appropriately laid out text and a masthead. This task has helped me with music magazine because this is the first time i have created a magazine and i now know i have to take things like, masthead, house style and typography into consideration to create a successful magazine.

Here are two mastheads of rock/alternative magazines. As you can see they are quite similar in terms of colour scheme, Red, white and black and it is used in the same order in both. This is true for quite a lot of alternative/rock music magazine mastheads which maybe because the colour red connotes for danger, bad and power which most rock songs are about meaning that the use of the colour red is very fitting. Though both these magazines have the same colour scheme for the masthead, the typography used is clearly different. The font used for the NME magazine is bold and prominent which relates to the kind of artists NME features which is more heavy rock than the rolling stones magazine. From researching alternative/rock mastheads I can see what commonly features on it and so when I come to create my music magazine, if I do decide creating an alternative/rock one I know how to create a successful masthead that relates to the genre.

Today I have decided two look at two different magazines that are from different eras. The magazine on the left is from the late 40's and as you can see there are some differences from the vibe magazine 2010. Firstly the in the vibe magazine the two main focuses are the masthead and main cover image which is typical for most music magazine nowadays as they are the two most Important selling points. However in the magazine on the left everything seems to blend in and usually there is more focus on the main cover image but in this magazine the cover image doesn't not look important maybe suggesting the magazine is solely about music not the artist unlike modern magazines. Though these magazines are quite different there are still consistency's with the codes and conventions, for example there is still an identifiable masthead on both magazines and they both have cover lines and anchorage text to give the audience an insight as to what will be on the inside of the magazine. By looking at these magazines I can see how far music magazines have come and even though it have evolved to suit the Morden day person there are still constancy's within them. When I come to create my music magazine I know that I have to consider my audience and whether or not what I want to put in will be suitable for them.

Lorde is a very successful singer- songwriter that produces music that consist of electro, pop and rock. Lorde's style Is very consistent as she has this cool/simplistic/edgy ethos to her and this is reflected in her music, image and style. In the billboard magazine that features her it is has
simplistic colour scheme, which is different shades of grey, white and hints of black to help give off a cool vibe. Also the magazine does not feature many things on it which helps to focus on her and her facial expression, which is quite neutral showing that she doesn't need gimmicks to sell her self. Her album cover reflects the kind of artist she is as it is very minimalist due to only having two contrasting colours, however using the word 'heroine' makes and impact as it has shock value and it also refers to how she has made a massive impact on todays music industry. Further more Lorde's style is very distinctive as she has quite wild her and in all her photos she has a bland expression that intrigues the audience as she does not give much away about herself. By doing this research I know now that to create a successful music magazine my cover star will need to look the part and have a running theme which can be used in the magazine.

Here I have analysed the top of the pops magazine featuring Cher Lloyd for its codes and conventions. I have picked this magazine because even though it doesn't it doesn't relate to the music genre that I like and when I come to create my music magazine I won't use the same stylization, this magazine is a great example on how specific codes and conventions can display
a specific genre and a magazine ethos. From looking at this magazine I can gather that its a pop magazine aimed at teenage girls due to its, colour scheme, cover lines and main cover image. When I come to create my music magazine I will think about how the use of code and conventions can help to portray a specific ethos and genre of a magazine.

As part of my research for my music magazine, I have looked into bands who have the same genre of music that i like, which is alternative/indie. These photos are styled in the same way, sitting or standing in a line which creates a sense of unity that they are all have an equal part in creating their music. from reaching alternative/indie bands I have come to realise that quite a lot of them wear sunglasses in their photos. This is really fitting with there ethos because both their music and look have a cool element to it. I also liked these photos of alternative/indie bands because they all 'look the part'. for example in the second band photo they are wearing blues and black, and in the last band photo they are wearing suits. By coordinating like this it shows that they are refined as an artist and know exactly what they are doing. After doing this research I now know what makes a good band photo and how to show the audience what the artist is all about and also what kind of music they produce. This will help me when I come to create my music magazine.

Creative NME task.

In lesson we were set with the task to create a front cover for NME  magazine. We were supplied with a cover star photo and the magazines masthead to help us successfully create a NME front. To create this we cover we used paint.net to put all the basic components together then on publisher I added the main cover line, cover stories and some anchorage text. I also I included a barcode to make it look realistic as a real magazine would have one. Having done this task it has tested my knowledge of what should be on the front cover of a magazine and how it should be stylized. Furthermore when I come to create my own music magazine I can use the skills I gained from completing this task and apply it to mine.

As part of my research for my music magazine I have been looking artist/band names and how they are stylized to help me think about what I may call my artist and what direction I want my magazine to be in. I have selected two artist names that in my opinion is effective because firstly it is short meaning that fans will easily remember which will gain more publicity. Secondly the typography used is very distinctive. The typography used for 'Bastille' is in block capitals which looks clear and easy to read, also the fact that there is a triangle replacing the 'A' instantly makes the name stand out as the audience will notice it. The second artists name is effective because it has an unusual font style, thus it will intrigue the audience and it will be memorable to them. Also the typography for the coral relates to the style of music they produce, which is indie/hippy music. By looking at different types of band names I now have a better idea of the kind of name I want to go for and how the style of music plays a part in the name.

Here are two magazine covers that I think personally are effective and due to that I would want my music magazine to have the similar type of style to it. These two magazines both have the same colour scheme of red, black and white which looks simplistic which is the look I want to go for. Also you can see from both magazines the main cover image Is of successful female artists that have an Iconic thing to them. For example in the Trace magazine that feature kelis, she has her face half painted white, and a bold neck piece which reflects her style and music which is funky/retro. Similarly the NME magazine featuring Haim, the sisters are standing close to each other and wearing leather edgy clothing which reflects their image of a girl power, alternative-pop group. furthermore the fact that both of the magazines backgrounds are white puts more attention on the cover stars and the masthead, which gives the magazine a cool simplistic element. Looking at these two magazine covers have a given me some ideas on how I want my music magazine to look like and what kind of style I want to go for.

Here is the front cover of the Rolling stones magazine that features Lorde. I particularly like the front cover because of its effortless use of a colour scheme. The only colours used are red, black and white which is very fitting with the the magazine style as it has a 'cool vibe' about it, so when i come to create my music magazine i hope it is as professional as this. Also this magazine is usually catered to fans of alternative/rock/indie style music, which i'm very much a fan of so the fact that the cover star is Lorde attracts me to this magazine. The image of the cover star also helps to reflect the cool vibe of the magazine because as you can see Lorde is standing in a slouched position as if she doesn't really care and she is dressed in all black which shows she has a punk rock fashion sense.

Drafting & planning: Investigating typography

In class today we were given this sheet with different types of typography, and we were asked to rank them in order according to how effective it is on the magazine cover.
In my opinion i think E's typography is the most effective out of them because the bold text stands out and it keeps in the theme of the magazines house style and it fits in with the masthead, also the bold text helps to reflect the main image of Christina as the image is bold and grabs the readers attention. However i chose to rank C to be the least effective typography on a magazine because it looks plain, doesn't fit in with the house style and doesn't look smart or professional. I have rank D as 5th because it i quite hard to read meaning that the reader will be less likely to pick up the magazine, also the text looks dated which goes against the magazines style. I ranked B as second because i thought that the bold first letter in each word fits in the magazine style however i ranked it as second because of the fact that the text you cant clearly read all of the word, as part of it is in the shadow part of the main image.
